Dr. John E. Kelly III
Senior Vice President and Director, IBM Research

Dr. John E. Kelly III is IBM senior vice president and director of Research. In this job he directs the worldwide operations of IBM Research, with about 3,000 technical employees at eight laboratories in six countries around the world, and helps guide IBM’s overall technical strategy.

Dr. Kelly’s top priority as head of IBM Research is to stimulate innovation in key areas and quickly bring those innovations into the marketplace to sustain and grow IBM’s existing business, and to create the new businesses of IBM’s future. IBM applies these innovations to help our clients succeed. 

Dr. Kelly also leads IBM’s worldwide intellectual property business. 

Prior to beginning his current assignment in July of 2007, Dr. Kelly was senior vice president of Technology and Intellectual Property, responsible for IBM’s technical and innovation strategies.  

In 2000, Dr. Kelly was group executive for IBM’s Technology Group, where he was responsible for developing, manufacturing and marketing IBM’s microelectronics technologies, products and services. 

Dr. Kelly joined IBM in 1980.  Between 1980 and 1990, he held numerous management and technical positions related to the development and manufacturing of IBM’s advanced semiconductor technologies.  In 1990, he was named director of IBM’s Semiconductor Research and Development Center.  In 1994, he was appointed vice president of business process reengineering for the Microelectronics Division. 

In 1995, he was named vice president of systems, technology and science for the IBM Research Division.  In this role, Dr. Kelly was responsible for the company’s most advanced research activities.  The following year, he was named vice president of strategy, technology and operations for the Microelectronics Division.  In 1997, he was appointed vice president of server development (from work stations to supercomputers) for IBM.  In January of 1999, he was appointed general manager of IBM’s Microelectronics Division, a position he held until August 2000. 

Dr. Kelly received a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Union College in 1976.  He received a Master of Science degree in physics from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1978 and his Doctorate in materials engineering from RPI in 1980.  In 2004, he received an Honorary Doctorate of Science from The Graduate School at Union College. 

Dr. Kelly is on the Board of Governors of The IBM Academy of Technology; a board member and former chairman of the Semiconductor Industry Association; a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and on The Board of Trustees of Union College.

Robert B. Catell became Chairman, National Grid, U.S. following the acquisition, by National Grid, of KeySpan Corporation. Prior to the acquisition, Mr. Catell was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of KeySpan Corporation and KeySpan Energy Delivery, the former Brooklyn Union. His career with Brooklyn Union started in 1958.

Mr. Catell is Chairman of Alberta Northeast Gas Ltd., and a member of the board of directors of KEYERA Energy Management Ltd.

Mr. Catell is Chair of the Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center (Advanced Energy Center), Cristo Rey Network’s Lourdes Academy, Futures in Education, New York State Foundation for Science, Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR), and the New York State Smart Grid Consortium.

He is also Co-Chair of the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership.

Mr. Catell is Chair of the Leadership Advisory Cabinet to the “Long Island Regional Planning Council” for the LI 2035 Regional Comprehensive Sustainability Plan.

He is also a member of the Association of Energy Engineers, CUNY Business Leadership Council, National Petroleum Council (NPC), National Society of Professional Engineers, NYS Society of Professional Engineers, and the Society of Gas Lighting (SOGL).

He is a Vice-Chairman of the National Petroleum Council’s Natural Gas Committee and also a member of its Finance Committee. Additionally, he serves on the Advisory Board for SUNY Farmingdale and the President’s Advisory Council at Adelphi University.

Mr. Catell is a past Chairman of the American Gas Association, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, Long Island Association, Partnership for New York City, Inc., U.S. Energy Association (USEA), and the Advisory Board of the City College of New York’s School of Engineering.

He serves as a Member Emeritus of the Brooklyn Law School, and, until recently, he was also a board member of: the Brooklyn Public Library Foundation, Business Council of NYS, Edison Electric Institute (EEI), Energy Association of NYS, Long Island Foreign Affairs Forum, and the advisory board of HeartShare for Human Services.

Mr. Catell received both is Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the City College of New York and is a Registered Professional Engineer. He has attended Columbia University’s Executive Development Program, and the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School.

Dr. Yacov Shamash
Vice President for Economic Development and Dean,

Dr. Shamash is Vice President for Economic Development and the Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Stony Brook University. As Vice President, Dr. Shamash supervises the University’s three incubators, two New York State Centers for Advanced Technology, the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT), the Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center, the Small Business Development Center, and the workforce development programs of the Center for Emerging Technologies. The College of Engineering and Applied Sciences has more than 1,700 undergraduate and 950 graduate students. During his tenure, College research expenditures have increased five fold to $25M per year. In 1994 he helped establish the highly successful state-wide SPIR program (Strategic Partnership for Industrial Resurgence). During the past ten years, working through the SPIR program, the College has partnered with more than 395 companies to assist them with more than 2,127 projects.

Prior to joining SUNY Stony Brook in 1992, Dr. Shamash served as the Director of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Washington State University and was responsible for the establishment of a National Science Foundation Industry/University Center for the Design of Analog/Digital Integrated Circuits.

He is a member of the Board of Directors of Keytronic Corp., American Medical Alert Corp., and Applied DNA, Inc. He is also a member of the Board of Directors for the New York State Office of Science, Technology and Academic Research (NYSTAR), the Foundation for Science, Technology and Innovation, the Long Island Software & Technology Network (LISTnet) and the Long Island Angel Network.

Dr. Shamash has also held faculty positions at Florida Atlantic University, the University of Pennsylvania and Tel Aviv University. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Imperial College of Science and Technology in London, England. He has authored more than 130 publications and is a Fellow of the IEEE.

Dr. Ralph James is the 2009 President Elect of the SPIE, which is world’s largest professional society devoted to lasers, optics, photonics and solar energy. He served as the Associate Laboratory Director for the Energy, Environment and National Security Directorate with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory from 2001-2008. He is currently a Program Manager and Senior Scientist at BNL, where he manages basic and applied research devoted to materials, electronic and imaging devices, and integrated circuits. Dr. James has authored more than 440 scientific publications, served as editor of 17 books, and holds 11 patents. He is a Fellow of the SPIE, IEEE, AAAS, OSA, and APS, and he has received numerous prestigious international honors in recognition of his scientific accomplishments, including Discover Magazine Innovator of the Year, 5 R&D100 awards, IEEE Outstanding Radiation Instrumentation Award, Room-Temperature Semiconductor Scientist Award, Long Island Person of the Year in Science, 50 World’s Best Technologies Award, among others.

Ric C. Trotta has extensive senior level corporate and management consulting experience in business development, technology and strategic management. As President and senior consultant at Trotta Associates, he works with government, industry, and academic clients to identify market opportunities, develop business plans and facilitate strategic alliances. Product areas have included: medical devices, advanced transportation, energy, defense systems, security, food safety and consumer products. In addition, he has directed projects to improve regional economic activity, led efforts to expand commercial industry involvement on defense programs and served as an advisor to Government on R&D and industrial policy. Since 2001, Mr. Trotta has served as the chair of the Federal Laboratory Consortium National Advisory Council where he and a diverse team of executives provide guidance to help commercialize technologies developed in federal laboratories.

Prior to founding Trotta Associates, he was Corporate Director of Development Resources for Grumman Corp., where he managed all research and development and proposal resources to develop new business for the company’s Aerospace, Electronics, Transportation and Data Systems divisions.

Program Manager for the Transmission, Distribution and Generation Research and Development Program at National Grid, responsible to both National Grid and LIPA for research activities. Joined the utility in 1981 worked in both the Electric and Gas Engineering groups and became a manager in Research and Development in 1995. Worked on several large photovoltaic projects, fuel cell, generation related emissions reduction projects, as well as electric and hybrid vehicle projects. BS in Chemical Engineering and MS in Engineering Management.

Jerry Burstein
New York City Transit Authority

Jerry Burstein is a seasoned executive with experience in a number of industries who approaches each new challenge drawing on his experience, education and adaptability. He has a Bachelor of Science in electronics engineering from the University of Rochester and a Master of Science in Management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is a ASQ Certified Quality Engineer. His experience includes being the Quality Project engineer on the Apollo Lunar Landing Module Guidance and Control system; the NASA Delta missile guidance system and the Viking Mars Lander. Moving to the new mini computer industry he established the incoming inspection department for Digital Equipment and later became the Quality manager for printer products.

Mr. Burstein worked in government contracting and business furniture industry as well as the security industry prior to working with the New York State economic development program “Manufacturing Extension Partnership”. He created a nationally recognized MEP for Long Island bringing business consulting services to small and mid-size Long Island manufacturers at a time when they were losing 250,000 jobs and struggling to stay afloat. His efforts, together with Jim Smith, (currently Assistant Vice President for Economic Development at SUNY Stony Brook) brought new business to these manufacturers and helped them move from a defense based economy to one based on technology innovation.

Currently, Mr. Burstein works for New York City Transit where he created the Central Electronics Shop which repairs over 70,000 electronics modules a year in a cost effective high tech service facility. Working to help secure Transit’s facilities he is managing the installation of various projects including access control, central computerized monitoring systems and portable radio systems. He also is working on the Engineering team for communications systems and customer information systems.

Dr. Clive Clayton

Dr Clive Clayton holds the rank of Leading Professor in Materials Science and Engineering at Stony Brook University where he has been on the faculty since 1978. He is a Fellow of the Electrochemical Society and has edited eight professional conference proceedings and co-written nearly 200 publications concerned with the application of surface science to fundamental and applied aspects of materials. His research has recently developed in the direction of green materials synthesis and analysis and ecoefficiency studies.

He has served as department Chair of Materials Science and Engineering and Associate Dean of Engineering for research. In the latter position he co-founded the Stony Brook University SPIR program with Dean Yacov Shamash and has been Director for SPIR since 1994. Dr Clayton also is the Director of the Institute for Sustainable Development.

Dave Cordts was most recently Vice-President and General Manager at Ametek Hughes-Treitler, designer and manufacturer of high end thermal management systems in the Aerospace and Defense Industry. Prior to this Dave was President of Rockwell Automation Precision Robotics Division in the Semiconductor and Electronics industry. A graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo in Mechanical Engineering, Dave has over 30 years of executive management experience in progressive engineering and manufacturing businesses serving such industries as Aerospace & Defense, Semiconductor, Electronics, Medical Testing, and Fitness Equipment. Dave has international experience having established or managed operations in China, Israel, the Netherlands and Mexico. Dave served on Long Island’s Cradle of Aviation Board of Directors and currently serves on the museum’s Advisory Board as well as the Long Island Technology Hall of Patent Award Committee.

Serdar Z. Elgun received his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Aegean University of Izmir, Turkey, in 1977, and the M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Mississippi State University in 1981 where he worked on “Thermal Gradient Solar Pond” and “Off-Peak Energy Storage in Phase Change Materials” projects funded by Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Between 1981 and 1982 he attended the graduate program in New Mexico State University and worked on “Thermal Storage of Solar Energy” projects. Between 1992 and 1996 he also attended the graduate program of Material Science Engineering department at Stony Brook University and conducted research on ”Crack Propagation through PS and PMMA Interface due to Impact” . In 1982 he joined the Mechanical Engineering Technology department of Farmingdale State College. Currently he is a professor at Farmingdale State College of New York serving as a Department Chair since 2005. He is an active member of the Farmingdale Solar Energy Center serving in various capacities since its inception in 2000. Currently, he sreves as a co-director of the Center. He developed Mechanical Engineering Technology B.S. program, Facility Management B.S. program and five online courses that have been offered through Suny Learning Network (SLN). He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE).

Marjaneh Issapour is a graduate of Columbia University with the Master Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology. She is a full time faculty at the department of Electrical /Computer Engineering Technology and an active member of the Solar Energy Center at the college. Currently she serves as the co-director of the Center. She is also the Director of the Institute for Networking Systems Training and Education Programs (INSTEP) at Farmingdale. Marj holds the Professional Engineering License in New York state. She is also a Cisco certified (CCNA).

Her area of research is Renewable and Alternative energy sources. She has been employed by AT& T Information Systems, Siemens Data Switching and NEC. She has been a recipient of Rene Chasmen Affirmative action Award. She is a motivational speaker for women in Science and Engineering.

Professor Mahajan holds a joint appointment between Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and serves as the Site Director, NSF Center for BioEnergy Research & Development (C-BERD). His research interests focus on Energy issues that includes a portfolio of projects on Methane hydrates, H2 production, Fuel Cells, Fischer-Tropsch, Methanol, and Mixed alcohol synthesis using soluble (single-site) or slurried (nano heterogeneous or colloidal phase) based catalysts. He has organized symposia and international workshops on issues such as Clean Fuels, Methane Hydrates, and Biomass. He serves on the Editorial Board of: Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy (JRSE), International Journal of Oil, Gas and Coal Technology and The Open Petroleum Journal. He is the author of over 80 publications including book chapters, 10 patents, and presented over 140 invited lectures on clean energy topics, nationally and internationally. He is member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AICHE), the American Chemical Society (ACS), and the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS). His recent awards include: Member, Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (RANS)-US Section (2006), Recipient, RANS Crown and Eagle Medal of Honor (for service in the field of “Petroleum Eng.” (2006), Outstanding Mentor Award from the U.S. Department of Energy (2007), University Visiting Professor, Government of Italy Fellowship, Universitá di Roma “La Sapienza”, Roma, Italy (2008), Delegation to Universities in Beijing and Shanghai to promote the low-carbon society, China (2009), Visiting Researcher. Mr. Newman is a serial entrepreneur with extensive experience in launching and financing a variety of successful technology, media, and financial corporations. As a Principal at Pipeline LLC, he works with early and growth stage technology companies on venture capital and business finance initiatives.
Prior to Pipeline, Mr. Newman served as Chief Executive Officer of several private and public companies where he was responsible for business launches, investment financing, organizational development, opportunity analysis, new business structuring, executive team building, operations management, venture capital financing, market trend analysis, revenue expansion, profit growth, product development, strategic planning, relationship building, client relationship management, and organization cross-function communication.
  In additional to serving on the Advanced Energy Center conference committee, Mr. Newman is a member of the Long Island Software and Technology Network Mentoring Council, and a Board Member of the Brookhaven Small Business Advisory Council. Mr. Newman is co-author of a book on software for commercial designers and is an inventor of record on two United States patents in the area of electronic distribution

John T. Wen received his B.Eng. from McGill University in 1979, M.S. from University of Illinois in 1981, and Ph.D. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1985, all in Electrical Engineering. From 1981-1982, he was a system engineer at Fisher Controls where he developed a plant-wide coordination control system for pulp and paper plants. From 1985-1988, he was a member of technical staff at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory where he developed new modeling and control algorithms for large space structures and space robots. Since 1988, he has been with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he is currently a Professor in the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering with a joint appointment in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering. He was appointed in 2005 as the Director of a New York State sponsored interdisciplinary research center, Center for Automation Technologies and Systems (CATS); within two years, the expenditure of the CATS grew by an order of magnitude.  In 2009, he was appointed as the Interim Director of the NSF Smart Lighting Engineering which involves 6 universities and over 30 investigators.  Dr. Wen was an ASEE/NASA Summer Faculty Fellow in 1993, and a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Senior Visiting Scientist in 1997. He was selected as an Oversea Assessor by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2004. He is an Associate Editor for the Journal on Optomechatronics and Robotica. Dr. Wen's research interest lies in the general area of modeling and control of dynamical systems with applications to vibration suppression, robot manipulation, opto-mechatronics systems, thermal management, and active flow control. He has over 200 refereed publications and five patents. Dr. Wen is a Fellow of IEEE.

Mr. Winchester is developing a new organization to promote CleanTech career opportunities, business formation and business expansion in New York State. As part of these efforts, he is active with the Advanced Energy Center located at the Stony Brook Research & Technology Park. This New York State supported Center is chartered to collaborate with Colleges and Universities, Laboratories, Companies, Government Agencies and other organizations to conduct and support R&D initiatives and to promote rapid commercialization of market driven Renewable and Energy Efficiency solutions. In addition, he serves on the Board of the Hauppauge Industrial Association and leads their “Business of CleanTech” initiatives. He is a Board Member of the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation where he co-chairs the Technology Committee. Prior to this, Mr. Winchester was the Divisional Vice President, IBM Partnership at Invision.com for 11 years. Invision, now mindSHIFT Technologies, was one the fastest growing Managed IT Services and Application Development companies in the country. His career has included starting and leading fast-growth companies as well as holding leadership positions for new product development and commercialization in both Fortune 500 and smaller companies. Mr. Winchester is a Vietnam veteran. He received his BBA Degree and attended Graduate School at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
