Advanced Energy Research & Technology Center (AERTC)

On November 19th and 20th of 2008, the Advanced Energy Center at Stony Brook University held its Second Annual International Conference at the Hyatt Regency Windwatch Hotel in Hauppauge, NY. Thanks to the exceptional support of NYSERDA, NYSTAR, and the NYS office of the Governor, a terrific planning committee and worldwide interest in the subject of Alternative Energy, the conference surpassed everyone's expectations in both content and attendance. The conference created a buzz around the new Advanced Energy Center, now under construction at the Stony Brook University Research & Technology Park, along with partners National Grid, and LIPA. There were over 1000 attendees and close to 10% traveled from outside the New York area. The sold out conference featured 136 speakers and presenters from around the world. The United Nations, Japan, the U.K., France, Canada, Liberia, and 8 different states were all represented. The attendees were about 65% industrial and 35% academic/research, which provided a great cross cultural learning experience and a superior technology transfer setting. Participating National Department of Energy Laboratories included Pacific Northwest, Brookhaven National Lab, Sandia, Los Alamos and the Department of Energy in Washington D.C.. Ivy League and high technology universities from all over the State as well as local private colleges were also active participants including Cornell and Columbia Universities, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Polytechnic-NYU, NYIT, SUNYs at Stony Brook, Farmingdale, Maritime and Binghamton, various CUNYs, Dowling College, Hofstra University and NJIT.

The two day conference was packed with five distinct tracks: Advanced Energy Options, Renewable Energy, Networks of the Future, Conservation & Efficiency and Innovation. Each was chaired by world renowned experts in their field.

The conference also featured a student poster research competition, which included 36 judged student energy posters, featuring more than 70 students. Over $1000 was awarded in prize money.

We all look forward to the 2009 Advanced Energy Conference, which is already in the planning stages. Keep an eye on the website, www.aertc.org, for info on the 2009 event.
