IRACDA NY-CAPS Program
Frequently Asked Questions

Is prior teaching experience a mandatory program requirement?
Prior experience is helpful, but not required. More importantly, applicants must show an interest in teaching at institutions that serve a population of students inclusive of students from diverse and underrepresented minority groups.

Is the IRACDA NY-CAPS program only open to members of underrepresented groups?
No, all racial and ethnic groups are encouraged to apply. However, successful applicants must demonstrate a commitment to encouraging underrepresented minority students' increased participation in biomedical research careers, which is a specific mission of the NY-CAPS program.

Am I responsible for securing a faculty mentor prior to Applying?
No. Applicants are required to list three faculty of interest on their application. The NY-CAPS program administration will assist you with finding a lab that is a good fit. We encourage you to research our faculty and their interests using this website.

What is the Teaching Requirement of NY-CAPS fellows?
NY-CAPS fellows will commit approximately 25% of their time to teaching and 75% to research. The Teaching requirement at Partner Institutions usually begins in the second year.

Can I choose what conferences I attend?
All NY-CAPS fellows are required to attend the annual IRACDA meeting.  Funding may also be available for Scholars to attend one scientific conference annually for presentation of scholarly research.
