On December 13-14, a special Stony Brook Symposium on Complex Matter was held at Stony Brook to celebrate the 70th birthday of Benjamin Chu, Distinguished Professor. Over 100 eminent scientists from around the world attended this symposium to recognize his significant contributions to the fields of polymer science and complex matter. The symposium comprised three main subjects: nanoscale characterization, phase transition and supramolecular structure, which coincide with Benjamin Chu's distinguished research efforts over 4 decades.
On Dec 16 many friends and colleagues joined with his family to celebrate Francis Bonner's 80th birthday. Prof. Bonner was the first chair of Stony Brook's Chemistry Department

On December 12, the department held a ribbon cutting cermony commemorating the rehabilitation of the 4th floor seminar room. The ceremony was followed by a presentation by the chair, Prof. Ojima, on the State of the Chemistry Department. The text of the presentation will be made available on the Chemistry Web site.
The department is pleased to announce the appointment of a new assistant to the Chair - Ms. Rita Nicholaides.

The seventh annual Sei Sujishi Award has been made to Ms. Gena Won, a sophomore Honors College member. This award recognizes Gena's performance as the outstanding freshman chemistry student for 2000-01. Gena was the top freshman in CHE 133, 134 and 142 out of approximately 900 students. The award is named in memory of Professor Sei Sujishi, former Chair of the Chemistry Department and Dean of Physical Sciences, who passed away in 1992. Gena is from Huntington and has excelled not only in chemistry, but in all of her studies. She did research during Summer 2001 with Professor Neta Dean of the Biochemistry Department, under the aegis of the URECA program. She will be honored at a Chemistry Department luncheon sometime this Fall.

The 2001 Emerson Award to the outstanding junior Chemistry major was awarded by faculty vote to Matthew Sturm. Matt also holds a Goldwater Scholarship and an Undergraduate Excellence Award. He has been working on research in Prof. Ojima's group for over a year.

The University held its 41st Commencement Ceremony. The Chemistry Department ceremony featured Dr. William Schoen (B.S., 1977) as the commencement speaker. Bill is Vice President at the Bayer Research Center in Connecticut. After graduating from Stony Brook, he received his Ph.D. from Harvard working with the late Robert B. Woodward.

Pictures of the ceremony at the recent ACS meeting in San Diego at which Prof. Ojima received the E.B. Hershberg Award for Important Discoveries in Medicinally Active Substances. The award is sponsored by Schering-Plough Corporation.

Prof. Ojima has established a website in memory of Dora Frachiolla-Kass (Ph.D., 1997, Ojima). Dora regrettably passed away in December, 2000 after an extended bout with cancer. The site includes a summary of her accomplishments.

The C&E News special issue celebrating the 125th anniversary of the ACS also has an article by Chi Wu (Ph.D., Chu, 1987) who is now a professor of chemistry at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a fellow the APS.

The Graduate School has chosen Dehai Liang (Ben Chu) as one of the recipients of the President's Award to Distinguished Doctoral Students. The winners of the Award will present a synopsis of their research at a symposium on May 15.
Young-Joo Lee (Clare Grey) and Jeonghoon Sun (Nicole Sampson) will receive a Graduate Council Commendation to Distinguished Doctoral Students.

Nancy Goroff announces:

On March 2, the chemistry department will once again host Chemistry Research Day. This event is a celebration of the many different research projects going on in the department. If you are carrying out research, you are strongly encouraged to present your work at this year's Chemistry Research Day. At last year's event, we had close to 100 posters.
Chemistry Research Day will take place in the Student Activities Center. Poster set-up in the SAC lobby will begin at 11:30 am. There will be a lunch for all participants at 12:30 pm, followed by the poster session from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. After a brief reception, at 4 pm Prof. Dan Raleigh will present a public lecture in the SAC auditorium on his research, entitled "Folding it Up. Protein Folding from A to Z."
Like last year, we will be putting together a catalog of the participants and poster titles. Please give your poster title to Italia Mazzullo by February 21 for inclusion in the list. Be sure to include the names of all contributors, including your advisor.
By participating, you will make Chemistry Research Day a success. This is your chance to show your stuff.
