• Arnold Wishnia's patented invention "Magnetic Resonance Imaging Using Hyperpolarized Noble Gases" has received the Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award in Emerging Technologies.  Honoring the most critical R&D advancements of 2000, the Research and Development Council of NJ announced that the 2000 Thomas Alva Edison Patent winners "made bold strides in diverse and significant fields."

• The department notes with deep regret the passing of one of its faculty, Prof. Patrick Herley.  Pat, who held a joint appointment in the Materials Science Department, was a major force in the Engineering Chemistry program.

• Iwao Ojima has been selected by the American Chemical Society as recipient of the 2001 E.B. Hershberg Award for Important Discoveries in Medicinally Active Substances.  The award is sponsored by Schering-Plough Corporation.

• Nicole Sampson has been designated an Arthur C. Cope Scholar by the American Chemical Society
• Jia (Tiffany) Zhou, a junior chemistry major doing research with Phil Johnson, has received a Gates Millennium Scholarship from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.  Tiffany spent last summer in San Jose, California, participating in the ACS Nuclear Division's summer program in nuclear chemistry for undergraduates.

• Akhilesh Tripathi (with John Parise) received both the Peggy Etter Memorial Award for the best abstract, and the Pauling Prize for the best poster. while attending the American Crystallographic Association meeting recently in St. Paul, Minneapolis.
• Iwao Ojima was elected a Fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences

• Bob Kerber is recovering nicely from recent open heart surgery.
• Peter Tonge and Nicole Sampson had a baby boy!  Sebastian Sampson-Tonge was born at 4:21am, 7-27-2000. 7 lb 12 oz, 20 inches.  They are all doing well.
• Dale Drueckhammer was recently presented the 2000 Green Chemistry Challenge Award by the Environmental Protection Agency (and Vice President Al Gore's National Partnership for Reinventing Government) for "Enzymes in Large-Scale Organic Synthesis."
• Marjorie Kandel and Bob Kerber were winners of the Academy of Teacher-Scholars competition for their proposal "Tools of Chemistry:  Reading, Writing, and Thinking in the Discipline"!  The Academy of Teacher-Scholars was established by the University Senate as an engine for educational innovation and to honor and reward excellent undergraduate teaching at Stony Brook.

• Akhilesh Tripathi (Parise)was awarded the best poster prize at the Annual USERS Meeting at NSLS 2000.  The title of his poster was Structure of Na₁₆(Nb_12.8Ti_3.2)O_44.8(OH)_3.28H₂O, a selective ion exchanger for sequestration of Sr²⁺, from a twinned 5x8x8 micrometer crystal

• Jeonghoon Sun (Sampson), Steven Demarest (Raleigh), Donna Luisi (Raleigh), Sapan Parikh (Tonge),  Akhilesh Tripathi (John Parise) and Dehai Liang (Chu) will receive Excellence in Research Awards from the SUNYSB Chapter of Sigma Xi.
• Jeonghoon Sun (Sampson), Yuguo Feng (Tonge), Satoshi Sato (Raleigh), Sapan Parikh (Tonge), Sharada Sivaraman (Tonge), Akhilesh Tripathi (Parise), Xinyuan Wu (Iwao Ojima)and Yin Ye (Sampson) have been selected to receive Sigma Xi travel awards
• Donna Luisi (Raleigh), Sapan Parikh (Tonge), Akhilesh Tripathi (Parise) and Dehai Liang (Chu) will be elected to membership in Sigma Xi
• Steven Demarest (Raleigh) has also been selected to receive the Finn Wold Memorial Travel Award from the Protein Society.

• Friday, April 28, was dedicated to Albert Haim who will retire from the department after 34 years of service.  Prof. Kenneth Leopold of the University of Minnesota  gave the colloquium and a gala dinner followed.

• Jim DiLorenzo (Ph.D., 1967) will be the commencement speaker at the Chemistry Commencement on May 19, 2000.  Jim is President of Signal Technology Corporation.

• The Department is pleased to announce that Arthur Suits (currently a staff member at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory) and Stan Wong (currently a Post Doc at Columbia U) will join the department as faculty.  They will hold joint appointments with the Brookhaven National Laboratory.

• Anand Vadehra, an undergraduate student with Nancy Goroff, was chosen recently to present his research at the Council on Undergraduate Research Poster Session on Capitol Hill. CUR has designated April 20 as a day to stress to members of Congress the importance of undergraduate research.  Anand was chosen as one of 60 undergraduates nationwide to present their research at the CUR poster session.
• ImmunoGen, Inc. announced that it has entered into a research collaboration with Iwao Ojima to develop novel taxane compounds which can be used as new effector molecules for the Company's Tumor-Activated Prodrug (TAP) technology.
• Carlos Simmerling has been selected as the recipient of the Tartikoff/Perelman Young Investigators Award from American Medical Development Company Founation for his research on breast cancer!

• East Islip Schools and Fort the Kids (FTK) Foundation of East Islip have announced that they will be honoring C. V. Krishnan as the FTK "Educator of the Year" on March 18, 2000.

• Nancy Goroff is the recipient of an NSF Career Development Award
