  • Elizabeth Millings, a junior CHE major and transfer from Suffolk Community College, made a poster presentation at Oak Ridge National Laboratory yesterday, as a participant in the Science and Energy Research Challenge. Her poster described work on synthesis of a PET radiotracer she carried out with Dr. Jacob Hooker at BNL. She took second place in the chemistry section and received a cash award. Congratulations to Elizabeth.

  • Prof. Candice Foley (Ph.D., 1985, Lauher) of Suffolk County Community College has provided a picture of Elizabeth (with Candice) at the honors ceremony.

  • With the beginning of the Fall semester, we note the retirement of two faculty members. Prof Arnold Wishnia, who joined the department in 1965 and Prof. Robert Schneider who was a member of the department since 1960.

We hear that the various activities at the Philaselphia ACS meeting were all emimently successful, namely:

  • The Symposium in Honor of the scientific career of John M. Alexander
  • Stony Brook’s Department of Chemistry Alumni Social hour
  • The ceremony celebrating the ACS Division of Chemical History's Chemical Breakthrough Award to Stony Brook University for the paper by Prof. P. C. Lauterbur, "Image Formation by Local Interactions: Examples Employing Nuclear Magnetic Resonance," published in Nature in 1973 (vol 242, p 190-191).

    We hope to present more details about these events in the future.

  • The long awaited current issue of The Chemistry Department annual newsletter has been maiied and is posted on this Web site. Among the items it describes is the announcement of “Celebrating 50 Years of Chemistry at Stony Brook”. The event will take place at the Student Activities Center (SAC) on Friday, Oct 17, 2008. It will be a full-day symposium including cutting-edge research posters by students and short lectures by alumni, friends and faculty. The event is scheduled in conjunction with Homecoming Weekend, so we hope to see many Alumni attend.

  • Today marked the 38th Graduation Convocation of the Department of Chemistry. The convocation address was presented by Prof. David R. Walt who is Robinson Professor at Tufts University. David is an alumnus of the department having received his Ph.D. under the direction of Francis Johnson in 1979.
