Important Details - Housing and Money

Chemistry graduate students are fully supported for the calendar year on teaching and research assistantships. The annual stipends are competitive with other major universities. Departmental and University Fellowships are also available with tuition scholarships included. There are several different options available for housing. Most graduate students live in residence halls or graduate and married housing complexes on campus for the first year. This gives them an opportunity to explore the area and find other prospective roommates. At some point most of them opt to share houses with other graduate students or live alone in a studio apartment. However, other students find that they can establish a better sense of community within the university housing system. The options are all pretty flexible and each student can choose what works best for them.

What We Do For Fun

Most students find that there are more opportunities for fun than free time to pursue them. An abbreviated list would include: trips into New York City to visit museums, catch a play on Broadway, see your favorite band at Madison Square Garden, or just romp around Greenwich Village for the day. Other students prefer the beautiful beaches of Long Island for having picnics, playing volleyball, soaking some rays or for a nice walk. In addition, party boats ply Long Island waters from Port Jefferson (a 10 minute car ride from USB); they attract hundreds of visitors from throughout the tri-state area. A little closer to home you have excellent cultural events on campus which include ballet, film and theater to mention a few. And of course there are always your standard bars, clubs, parties and impromptu social gatherings.
