Suffolk County Math Tournament for Elementary School Students

Organized and directed by local elementary math specialists Megan Roth-Ueno, Melora Lane, and Byron Lane; supported by the Suffolk County Math Teachers' Association; and hosted by the Center for Science and Mathematics Education at Stony Brook at Stony Brook University; the competition challenges students in grades four through six to answer higher-level and multi-step math problems in both individual and team competitions.
During the individual portion of the tournament, students are given 35 minutes to work independently on ten difficult problems. During the team portion, each five-student team is asked to work together to complete ten even more complex problems in only 25 minutes.
An example: "The sum of all the prime factors of 42 is subtracted from the sum of all the odd factors of 42. What is the result?"
