Zuzana Zachar and Paul Bingham received the Dr. Michael Maffetone research award from the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund
The Maffetone award was presented at the Funds’ Gala on Saturday, November 8 at the Huntington Hilton. The award was in recognition of Profs. Zachar and Bingham’s development of a novel class of cancer chemotherapy drugs at Stony Brook, initially with support from the Baldwin Fund. These new drugs are called thioctans. This work has continued in collaboration with Cornerstone Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Cornerstone has recently initiated Phase I human clinical trials of thioctans in Canada and the US.
In attendance on November 8th were ca. 350 Baldwin Fund donors, as well as Carol Baldwin, her son, actor Billy Baldwin, Stony Brook President Shirley Strum Kenny and Dean of the Stony Brook Medical School, Richard Fine.
Dr. Bingham is a Professor and Dr. Zachar is a Research Assistant Professor, both in the Department of Biochemistry & Cell Biology. Dr. Zachar is also the Director of the MAT Biology Program at Stony Brook.
