After serving 2 years in the United States Peace Corps in Ethiopia (1964-66), Dr. Callaway began her career as a public school science teacher. She began teaching in her home state of Iowa but after only two years, moved to Long Island to begin a 32 year tenure as a Biology teacher in East Islip High School. In this position she taught general biology, regents' biology, AP biology, and 7th grade life science. She introduced and taught courses in marine science, and psychology. She helped run the State Science Olympiad two years, worked on the Part D (required labs) committee for one year and was a member of the New York State Biology Chemistry Professional Development Network for 13 years. In this capacity she presented many professional development workshops for Suffolk County Biology/Living Environment teachers.

Dr. Callaway worked for the Protein Data Bank at Brookhaven National Laboratory for seven years as a data processor, running the programs that determined the accuracy of the coordinates of macromolecular structures submitted by researchers. She represented the PDB at several national conferences.

While working on her doctorate at Teachers College, Columbia University, Dr. Callaway assisted Dr. O. Roger Anderson in teaching an Electron Microscope class, and as an honorary instructor, taught a Cell Biology Laboratory class.

Her research at Columbia focused on the development of interactive computer programs based on a matrix of cognitive and learning styles to assist students in need of remediation in complex biology topics such as photosynthesis.

Her major focus in science education is helping teachers develop their own program so that is rich in hands on and inquiry activities, acting as learning facilitators to assist groups of students explore the natural world.
