The Professional Education Program - Outreach and the Marine Sciences Research Center at Stony Brook University have teamed up to conduct an Environmental Summer Camp sponsored by NYS Department of Environmental Conservation at Peconic Dunes in conjunction with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County.
The camp will give highly motivated youngsters ages 10-15 a chance to learn about our natural resources in a setting unmatched for its environmental beauty and diversity. The 130-acre North Fork Long Island site includes an unspoiled 32 acre freshwater lake, mature upland mixed hardwood forest of oak, birch, hickory and maple giving way to pitch pine, shadbush, black pine and beach plums dispersed among the facility's rolling white sand dunes. An adjacent saltwater estuary inlet with salt marsh lends itself as a field study site. In addition to environmental studies ranging from forestry to aquatic ecology, our students will have a chance to kayak, canoe, swim, fish, archery, basketball, soccer, volleyball, campfires and more.
