Business Development Area - will include distinct work areas categorized as follows:
Product Research/Food Processing and Development Laboratory - this will be established as a research/test processing area which will permit specialty product development and manufacturing on a cost-effective basis where users can produce with assurance of safety and quality. For example, this area will permit viticulturists to explore the development of personal care products such as body oils, creams, shampoo and soap from grape seed oil, develop and test formulas for food products such as cheese and jams and jellies using locally produced wines.
Educational Area - conference rooms and meeting areas will be provided to allow for the provision of educational programs in the areas of food safety, nutrition, general business training for specialty food producers, and the conduct of consumer research and focus groups.
In furtherance of the distinct work pursued in the Business Development Area, it will be necessary to establish a shared-use processing area where concepts can be taken to proof of commercialization.
Shared-Use Processing Area - will be established to create a greater link between Long Island agricultural production and food processing, reduce barriers for agricultural entrepreneurs looking to develop new product lines, and retain agriculture and food dollars in the local economy. The Processing Area can be rented out by the hour, as needed, at affordable rates and will allow local farmers and viticulturists to add value to their agricultural commodities; give community food businesses the opportunity to expand into new lines; or help potential food entrepreneurs to start new businesses. This area will offer agricultural entrepreneurs and start-up and expanding businesses the opportunity to explore food production without the high cost of equipment or manufacturing space. The Shared-Use Processing Area will include distinct work areas categorized as follows:
Hot Process Area -
this area will be equipped to allow for the preparation, processing and packaging of retail food products and specialty and gourmet foods such as sauces, jams and jellies, soups, organic baby food.
Dry Process Area – -this area will be equipped to allow for the preparation, processing and packaging of such items as specialty breads, pies, cookies, cakes and candies.
