Attention: Graduate Students Studying Off-Campus

Registered graduate students performing research or studying off-campus for the full semester are eligible for certain fee waivers. The deadline for requesting the waiver for the Fall 2008 semester is September 16, 2008.

Registered graduate students living off-campus performing research or studying off-campus for the full semester are eligible to have the on-campus portion (transportation and infirmary) of their comprehensive fee waived. The college fee and technology fee portions of the comprehensive fee cannot be waived.

Graduate students living in campus dormitories or apartments are not eligible for waivers of the infirmary or transportation fee.

The graduate student studying off campus must send an E-mail or letter to their department secretary, graduate secretary or chairperson, who in turn verifies the student's off-campus situation and then forwards the following information to the Student Accounts Office:

  • Name of the student,
  • Student Stony Brook Identification Number,
  • Semester and Year,
  • Verifying statement (such as: "To the best of my knowledge this student will be studying off-campus for the Fall 2008 semester or the semester in question).

E-mails from the department verifying the student's off-campus situation information must be forwarded to Kathleen Czak-Malone in the Student Accounts Office.

Department verifications can also be sent using inter-office mail to:

Student Accounts Office
254 Administration Building
Stony Brook University
Stony Brook, NY 11794-1301

Since fee waivers are semester specific, a new fee waiver must be filed through the department verification process for any future term within the first three weeks of the term.

Incomplete waiver requests (without name, identification, semester and year, or verifying statement) will not be honored. Fee waiver requests not verified by the department will not be considered.

There are no partial fee waivers. A full semester is considered from September 2, 2008 to December 19, 2008 for the Fall 2008 semester and January 26, 2009 to May 8, 2009 for the Spring 2009 semester. Students that are on campus at any time during the period specified are not eligible.

All fee waiver requests must be received at the Student Accounts Office by the third week of classes. For the Fall 2008 semester, the fee waiver request must be received at the Student Accounts Office by September 16, 2008. For the Spring 2009 semester, the fee waiver request must be received at the Student Accounts Office by February 13, 2009.

If the student remains off-campus for additional semesters, a new waiver must be filed for those semesters by the third week of classes for the respective semester.
