Broad Based Fees

In accordance with State University of New York Policy 7804, Stony Brook University charges certain fees in addition to the tuition fee for students enrolled at the University. These broad-based fees are generally charged to all enrolled students to finance discrete activities that benefit the student body, excluding those activities that are part of the core instructional program. Broad-based fees include the Intercollegiate Athletics Fee, Recreation Center and Fields Fee, Student Health Services Fee, Technology Fee, and the Transportation Fee. 2012/2013 Broad Based Fees Proposal

In order to remain competitive and continue the quality of services that our students require and expect , increases to the Comprehensive Fee have been introduced for the 2012/2013 academic year. The Comprehensive Fee components include support for continued and expanded services in Intercollegiate Athletics, Student Health Services, Recreation Center / Fields, Technology and Transportation.

Over the past ten months, leadership in various fee-funded service units at Stony Brook have been meeting with student-based committees who are consulting and advising on Stony Brook's proposed Comprehensive Fee increase. Messages regarding these proposed increases were sent to all students on Wednesday, March 28th as the next step in the consultation process, the goal of which is to transparently inform you of developments and request your feedback.

The fee proposal is summarized below.

The University will host two open forum discussions on broad based fees next month . All service unit heads will be on hand to respond to questions and concerns.

For Undergraduate Students:
A forum discussion will be held in the Student Activity Center on Wednesday , April 11 during Campus Lifetime
For Graduate Students:
A forum discussion will be held in Room 302 of the Student Activity Center on Thursday, April 12 from 4:30 to 6:00 pm.

Students who would like to provide feedback regarding the proposed fee increase can also submit feedback online.

College Fee

State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees policy requires collection of the College Fee from all students. Proceeds from the fee are used to supplement campus operations.

The College Fee is assessed to all students, and is prorated for part time students.

Intercollegiate Athletics Fee (Undergraduate Students Only)

The Intercollegiate Athletics Fee provides support for Stony Brook University's 20 Division I Intercollegiate Athletic programs. Students assessed this fee can attend all regular season intercollegiate athletic events without charge.

Recreation Center and Fields Fee

The Recreation Center and Fields Fee supports the operation of our new Recreation Center and pays for the development and maintenance of new and existing sport fields.

The Recreation Center Fee is assessed only to undergraduate students, and is prorated for part time enrollment.

Student Health Services Fee (Formally Infirmary Fee)

Revenue from this fee is directed to health counseling and prevention services and related programs. The fee funds the operation of the Student Health Services Office.

The Infirmary Fee is assessed to all students, and is prorated for part time enrollment. Waivers of the Infirmary Fee are granted only for students enrolled in courses or Research/Internships ALL listed with a designation of ON-LINE or OFF-CAMPUS, or ALL meeting after 5:00 PM or on Saturday/Sunday. Courses, internships, and credit bearing research without officially listed meeting times or locations are generally charged this fee by default. Students who reside in on-campus dormitories or University apartments are not eligible for a waiver. Requests for a waiver of this fee should be made in writing to the Office of Student Accounts if eligible as outlined above.

Technology Fee

Revenue generated from the Technology Fee is used to address specific technology needs such as computing and information technology (i.e., smart classrooms, distance learning offerings, high speed internet connection), library automation, library electronic databases, remote network access, public computing sites, student services automation (i.e., registration, billing), and other administrative systems.

This fee is charged to all students, and is pro rated for part time enrollment.

Transportation Fee

The Transportation Fee supports the operation and maintenance of student transportation services on campus and between the campus and the surrounding community.

This fee is charged to all students, and is prorated for part time enrollment. Waivers of the Transportation Fee are granted only for students enrolled exclusively in courses or credit bearing Research/Internships ALL listed with an official designation of ON-LINE or OFF-CAMPUS.
