Dr. Hongkyung Kim, assistant professor, specializes in East Asian thoughts and religions, especially Confucianism and Taoism. He received his Ph.D. from Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul, Korea, with a dissertation titled “A Study on the Neo-Confucianism during the Early Joseon (Choson) Dynasty” in 1994. He has taught Confucianism, Taoism, Korean and Japanese religions, Korean Culture and Literature at SUNY Stony Brook since the fall 2003.
He has numerous articles and chapters in books about the philosophy and religions of Korea and China including some translations. He is also the author of Laozi: Art of Living, Songs of the Old (Seoul, 2003) and Confucian Thoughts of the Government School during the Early Joseon (Choson) Dynasty (Seoul, 1996). He is currently participating in a research project about the ancient archaeological documents on Chinese philosophy while working as a managing editor for the Wonhyo Translation Project. He is currently working on a publication, history of Korean thoughts. Based on his accumulated research on East Asian history and philosophy, he plans to conduct researches on the intellectual history of East Asia through the paradigm of ‘philosophy of culture.
