Summer Research Institute

Overview
SUNY AGEP considers research an integral part of the college experience and a way to encourage
graduate study because it integrates students early into the research culture. Therefore,
SUNY AGEP sponsors an annual Summer Research Institute (SRI) which offers qualified
underrepresented minority undergraduates in the SMET disciplines an enriching and valuable
research experience. Participants are placed under the direction and guidance of faculty
members and researchers at Stony Brook University for an intensive ten-week residential
program.Laboratory or Brookhaven National Laboratory, two cutting edge laboratories leading
scientific research nationally and worldwide, located only 30 minutes away.

Outline of Activities
Research is the main focus of the summer program. Each SRI participant will be placed under the
direction of a Stony Brook University faculty mentor and graduate student to work on a specific
research assignment. This is a unique opportunity to receive hands-on training in basic science research.
The SRI also features a variety of seminars, workshops, and tours designed to enhance skills needed for graduate study.
-
The Research Methods Seminar seeks to orient students on the design and execution of research,
and provide guidance to each participant on their individual research project.
-
The Writing Workshop help students prepare a solid, grammatically well-written, and compelling
statement of purpose for their graduate school application.
-
Other workshops that focus on a broad spectrum of graduate study topics such as tips on applying
to graduate school, money management, and so forth.
-
We also host a tour to either Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory or Brookhaven National Laboratory,
two cutting edge laboratories leading scientific research nationally and worldwide, located only
30 minutes away.
At the end of the SRI, all participants are expected to create a poster on their research project and present it
at the SRI Research Symposium. Students are also expected to submit an abstract of their research during the seventh
week of the program, which is published in the symposium program booklet. This experience offers students the chance
to participate in a real conference environment, enhance their presentation skills, and feel a sense of great accomplishment.
