What is the Golden Key International Honor Society?
The Golden Key International Honor Society, a non-profit organization founded in 1977, recognizes college students solely on the basis of their academic achievements. Since its founding in 1977, Golden Key has emerged as one of the most dynamic, forward-thinking organizations in higher education. Committed to an ethos of recognizing academic achievement and encouraging altruistic service, the Society’s on-campus presence has reached nearly 350 campuses in seven countries including Australia, Canada, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates and the United States. Golden Key has over 1.6 million members worldwide.
Golden Key, as an academic honor society, recognizes and encourages scholastic achievement and excellence among college and university students from all academic disciplines. The Society awards its members over $500,000 annually through 17 different scholarship and award programs. Members are connected to exclusive career opportunities and assistance through Golden Key's partnerships with major corporations and graduate programs. The Society provides campus and community service opportunities enabling personal growth and leadership development as well as collaborating with university faculty and administrators to develop and maintain high standards of education.
A Board of Directors governs Golden Key, and the Academic Council, made up of volunteers from diverse academic backgrounds, preserves the Society's academic standards. The Society maintains active membership in several organizations including the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS), the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC), the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), the National Scholarship Providers Association (NSPA), the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) and the Points of Light Foundation.

How Do I Gain Membership in Golden Key?
Qualifying for Golden Key International Honor Society membership acknowledges exceptional ability to perform at a high academic level. The Stony Brook chapter of Golden Key recognizes the top 15% of all juniors and seniors based upon cumulative grade point average. Students who have completed at least one semester at Stony Brook, earned at least 57 credits toward graduation, and have a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (Stony Brook courses only) are eligible to join. Membership is offered at the beginning of the fall semester based upon all prior completed Stony Brook coursework (including winter and summer sessions).
In mid-September, all invitations to join Golden Key are communicated via a SOLAR message and a printed letter which is mailed to on-campus addresses (for resident students) and home addresses (for commuter students). Upon receiving the invitation, students are asked to complete an on-line membership application at www.goldenkey.org and pay a one-time $70 lifetime membership fee. The fee provides you with many tangible benefits including: internship and job opportunities, scholarships, networking opportunities, service opportunities, and of course, recognition. Students who join Golden Key are invited to attend the annual induction ceremony and reception held each November at Stony Brook’s Student Activities Center. Family members of inductees are also invited and encouraged to attend.
